The Guizhou Key Laboratory of Metallurgical Engineering and Process Energy Conservation is a provincial key laboratory approved by the Science and Technology Department of Guizhou Province in August 2014 on the basis of the Metallurgical Experimental Center of the College of Materials and Metallurgy of Guizhou University.

The laboratory has conducted significant research in the fields of iron and steel metallurgy, aluminum metallurgy, titanium metallurgy, extraction of rare earths and rare metals, efficient use of low-grade complex associated resources, treatment and comprehensive utilization of three metallurgical wastes, energy-saving theory and technology of metallurgical industry, and industrial ecology. It has accumulated rich research experience and achieved a number of significant results. In recent years, the laboratory has paid special attention to the development of cross-integration between metallurgy and materials, chemicals and new energy. It has formed its own features and advantages especially in the field of new energy science and devices and in the preparation of anode, cathode, and electrolyte materials. In the past five years, it has undertaken 27 national-level projects, 125 provincial-level projects, and five horizontal projects. Research funding has totaled more than 50 million RMB. It has won 13 provincial science and technology awards and two achievements transformation awards.

Among its 36 permanent staff are eleven professors, eight associate professors, nine lecturers, five researchers and three assistant researchers. There are 20 PhDs holders, three doctoral supervisors and 17 masters advisors, one expert receiving State Council special allowance, one provincial core expert, one provincial expert, and three outstanding young science and technology talents.

The present main research directions of the laboratory are: key technologies for energy saving and emission reduction in metallurgical process, separation and efficient use of metal elements in composite symbiotic mines, and new processes and new technologies in metallurgical process. These three directions are the mainstream direction of metallurgical engineering and process energy conservation as well as the dominant disciplines formed by the long-term construction of the College of Materials and Metallurgy of Guizhou University. They are closely related to each other and have formed an organic whole for years. The Metallurgical Engineering discipline supported by the laboratory has one first-level master's degree program and three second-level master's degree programs in Non-Ferrous Metallurgy, Ferrous Metallurgy and Physical Chemistry of Metallurgy.

The overall construction goals of the laboratory are: to develop into a scientific research platform with high openness and creativity; to develop into a base for training innovation talents in metallurgical engineering and process energy-saving technology and a school-enterprise cooperation center; to build a leading research and development team in metallurgical engineering and energy conservation and emission reduction, with distinctive features and significant influence.
